For many, it can be very daunting trying to decide what to do after school, especially this year, with the sudden shut down of educational establishments and provision. The Get Ahead programme at New College can help with those difficult decisions, offering support in looking at various course choices and study options.
The Get Ahead programme offers a flexible range of small qualifications and experiences, which have been designed to help young people feel connected, confident and focused. As well as guidance, advice and careers information, young people can develop a whole range of skills ranging from money management to building confidence and resilience. Get Ahead is a stepping-stone to employment, full-time education or an apprenticeship.
The programme is open to those who are not working and are aged between 15 and 24. Those on the programme will be entitled to a £100 incentive payment, which will be paid through instalments throughout the programme. The balance will be paid once the applicant has moved on into education, employment or an apprenticeship.
The programme involves online lessons, which are distributed via email. There are also options to have workbooks sent via post, if a student is not able to access the programme online. Help and guidance will be available from the Get Ahead team and can be offered in a number of ways, through video calls, text, email and phone calls during office hours: 9am to 4:30pm.
The team has an aim to offer support, which will help young people make those important decisions about their future education or employment plans. Part of the programme also includes, CV writing and tips on applying for college, jobs and apprenticeships.
Angela Cornick, Get Ahead Programme Manager at New College Swindon, said: “The benefits of engaging with our programme include: keeping in touch with people, re-engaging with education and a learning environment and being able to earn a £100 incentive payment. Let us help guide you towards the future you want.”
