Two-Factor-Authentication (2FA)

As a part of our commitment to the cyber essentials accreditation, we are introducing Two-Factor-Authentication (2FA) for learners to access their Microsoft 365 accounts. This extra step in security has become common place in accessing all kinds of web-based accounts - minimising the risk of cyber attacks and keeping users data secure.

What this means for you:

It is important to know that 2FA will only apply to Microsoft 365 accounts and does not apply to:

  • Logging onto a college computer
  • Accessing ProPortal
  • VLE
  • Any other college system that doesn't not require a Microsoft 365 account

You will be automatically authenticated when connected to the New College Swindon network:

This means there will be no need for authenticator apps or inputting security codes when logging into a college device, or even on your own, if you're connected to our Wi-Fi network.

You will need to use alternative methods when logging on outside of the college network:

Students attending tutorials with their progress coach have received guidance on how to set up their 2FA, although there are other methods available this will typically be using your phone number.

When logging into Microsoft 365 from home, you will go through the usual 2FA procedure - 'text a code' or by using an authenticator app.

In any case, support is always available either in person at the IT helpdesks (North Star and Queens Drive) or via email ict.helpdesk@newcollege.ac.uk or by phone 01793 209562.
