You may be wondering how a degree-level course compares to college study. Some students find it easier because they’re focusing on one subject rather than three, while others find it different due to the increased expectation for independent study and research.
To help you feel confident and prepared, here are our top tips for managing your workload and staying on track:
If you’re joining New College Swindon University Centre, you’ll study in person one or two days a week, depending which course you’re studying. Outside of your face-to-face lessons, you’ll be expected to do independent study and research. Establish your most “productive hours” and set aside this time each day.
If you struggle to stay motivated and focused at home, we welcome all of our degree-level students in at any time during our weekday open hours to take advantage of the study spaces and libraries. If you prefer being at home, we recommend you keep a clear, distraction-free zone away from your bed where you can separate studies from relaxing.
Taking a break can boost concentration and will prevent burnout. If you’re struggling with your workload, you can speak to our Additional Learning Support Team who will help prioritise your work and offer advice to help you reduce stress. Other universities will have support available.
Focus on your wellbeing and prevent burnoutRest allows the brain to recover, improving concentration, memory, and motivation when studying. Spending time with family, enjoying hobbies, and getting plenty of sleep all support wellbeing and mental health. A balanced break does not mean switching off completely, but prioritising rest first helps you feel refreshed, confident, and ready to study more effectively
You’re not alone with how you’re feeling! Speaking to your peers is a good way to share your thoughts. If you’d prefer confidential support, New College Swindon University Centre offers a service for this.
Our friendly university centre team, lecturers and support staff are always on hand to help. Whether it’s tools to help you learn, counselling support during a difficult time, or careers advice – we are there for you.
