Swindon and Wiltshire Institute of Technology (SAWIoT) is excited to announce the recent appointment of Darran Marks as the incumbent managing director of the new state-of-the-art training facility. Darran assumes the role from Neil Brayshaw who previously led as interim managing director.
Darran has held numerous roles in Further Education across the South West and will be responsible for creating new, higher education opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers at SAWIoT for the Swindon and Wiltshire region. Leading from the front, Darran and the SAWIoT will play a key role in addressing the skills gaps in the UK STEM workforce, an area that has been backed by a £290 million government investment to improve industry standard facilities and equipment in education and training.
Darran Marks said:
“These are exciting times for the IoT here in Swindon and Wiltshire, with lots of short-term opportunity, particularly in the growth of our curriculum, student population and employer engagements. Medium term we’re excited to see these developments create and develop a workforce for the future, and seeing our first graduates walk down the IoT Boulevard will be absolutely amazing, long term we’re excited to see the Alumni grow and really place SAWIoT on the map for expert higher technical training”.
In his role as assistant principal for Construction Technologies, Engineering and Motor Vehicle at New College Swindon, Darran played an instrumental part in the support and wider development of the new engineering facilities at SAWIoT.
Darran is a passionate advocate for technical training and is himself a product of technical education. He studied as an apprentice before progressing into a career in education as a lecturer in plumbing, and later moving into curriculum management before joining New College Swindon as assistant principal.
