Pre 16 at New College Achieves Young Carers Standards Awards

23 Nov 2020

The Pre 16 Team at New College Swindon works with a number of Young Carers and have recently achieved the Young Carers Standards 1, 2 and 3. The awards recognise the support available to young people who often have additional responsibilities and concerns outside of College.

Over the last year, Pre 16 Young Carers have met on a weekly basis as a group and developed a Pre 16 charter, which specifically recognises the challenges they may experience. It gives learners a chance to express their wishes and share their needs. For example, some students have been provided with a red card, which allows them to leave class or visit Pre 16 staff, should they feel too tired to fully focus or too worried/anxious to remain in class.

Young Carers have also had the opportunity to achieve a wide range of AQA Unit Awards; these have included Animal Care, Studying Animal Welfare Needs, Alcohol Awareness and First Aid. As a group, they also recognised Young Carers Day with a group lunch, which everyone contributed to. They were able to show off their baking skills and enjoy the chance to relax, socialise and eat together.

Pre 16 Coordinator, Carla Hitch said: “Like other children and young people, young carers have goals and aspirations. Without the right support, young carers and young adult carers are at risk of lower exam results and spending less time in education. It was fantastic to see so many use this opportunity to gain additional qualifications. Shania Rowe worked especially hard and achieved a staggering 7 AQA Unit Awards and has been recognised as a Young Carers Champion!”
