The Adult Education Centre (AEC), part of New College Swindon, in the Town Centre offers a safe, friendly community for those who have had a break in education, have had their confidence knocked, or even experienced a major life set-back. In recent months, the AEC has started collaborating with Headway, a local charity supporting people who have been affected by a brain injury, to deliver a series of art and craft sessions, including bracelet making and pottery.
These sessions are designed to help relearn cognitive skills such as: following instructions, memory, working together, listening skills, focus and concentration, fine motor skills, social skills, mindfulness, confidence building, and a sense of achievement when they see the end product of their craft!
Ed Kirk Browne, AEC Manager said “After meeting with Caroline at Headway it was clear that we could offer a valuable partnership. The sessions have been very well received and it’s been super rewarding to see”. Caroline, Client and Community Lead at Headway Swindon, said “The main centre has never been so quiet!”
Feedback from the sessions include: “I really enjoyed the art sessions, I found it relaxing”, “The clients that attended the course were very focused and enjoyed the variety of arts and crafts each week.”
The Adult Education Centre is the pinnacle for adult community in Swindon, not only having the hub in the town centre, but touring Swindon at various community centres, ensuring accessible education and opportunity for all.
Students at the AEC can expect courses to support them get a job, improve their English and Maths, build confidence, learn about building a business, and more.
