New College and Supporting SMEs17 Oct 2020
New College prides itself on supporting SMEs and helping to shape the future workforce. Last year, Future Talent Forums was launched at New College. FTF is an opportunity for employers to develop their future workforce in partnership with the College and have direct influence on the curriculum.
Chris Baish, Vice Principal – Business Development and Employer Engagement, commented on the College’s on-going support of SMEs. He said: “New College has always embraced the need to work closely in support of SMEs to support skills development in the region. With Brexit on the horizon there has never been a more important time to respond and adapt to the needs of companies of all sizes. For example, we involve smaller employers alongside our larger partners at our Future Talent Forums, ensuring their skills needs are built into our curriculum development plans.
Recognising that they may not always have the same infrastructure as larger companies, we offer targeted support and advice on a range of aspects, such as accessing funding for training, as well as providing an enhanced service when recruiting Apprentices. In February, as part of National Apprenticeships Week, we’ll be hosting specific training sessions for SMEs to ensure they can access funding as part of the new Digital Apprenticeships Service.
It’s important too that we recognise the sometimes disproportionate contribution that many local SMEs make directly to the College and its students, whether that is CEOs and small business owners giving up their valuable time to develop and judge live projects, or small companies hosting an extended industry placement. It’s clear that there is a mutual commitment to making a difference.
We’d love to hear from even more SMEs who need our support, input or advice with skills development, or equally those that would like to support us in enhancing opportunities for our students.”
