Bath Body Art Competition Winner – Media Makeup at New College Swindon
20 New College Swindon Media Makeup students, ranging from Level 3 to degree-level, had the opportunity to attend the Bath Body Art Student Taster Day. They refined their skills through a competition with an editorial brief titled Avant Garde (flora and fauna).
Bath Body Art student day is an event designed to encourage students to explore body art and makeup. It aims to support emerging talent, providing hands-on experience and opportunities to showcase skills. Students learn from professional artists and gain important insights into the body art industry.
The students paired up, creating their looks on each other. The artist needs to be in the model’s shoes, so they can understand what it feels like and adjust their techniques accordingly.
Whilst the judges chose their winners, the students were able to walk around the festival, learning more about henna, festival hair, festival makeup and how to make money from these skills.
Media Makeup Level 3 student, Lilli, said, “Today has taught me that sticking to timings is key. It’s been really fun seeing the different skill levels.”
Degree-Level Media Makeup student, Jamie said: “I’ve loved seeing everyone’s creations and learning from the industry experts, for example, Glow World gave an excellent speech about what it’s like in the industry, the cost of insurance, etc., so it’s really great to hear the professional side and be able to expand my knowledge.”
Of the 20 NCS students, 6 placed first, second and third across each category. Further Education and Higher Education students were judged separately. Level 3 student, Lilli, won first place in the face painting competition. Another NCS student, Grace, won in the Avant-Garde competition.

Lizzie Corbett, Media Makeup lecturer, said, “We are so proud of all our students. With the end-of-year show just around the corner, they have all done incredibly well to put in even more effort, and it paid off! The Bath Body Art competition is a fantastic opportunity for our learners to not only showcase their skills but also gain valuable insights from industry professionals, network with suppliers and local artists, and feel firsthand the time pressures and constraints of real-life industry briefs, making them ready for a fast-paced environment. Competitions are a vital way to build resilience and gain inspiration from other creatives, we already cannot wait to see what everyone will produce next year!
