Former New College Swindon Digital Music Production student, Leonard Rwodzi (S1mba), has been nominated for a 2021 Brit Award - which is the highest profile music awards ceremony in the UK.

S1mba has received a nomination in the category ‘British Single with Mastercard’ for his hit single ‘Rover’ which has achieved a UK BPI certified Platinum status. His song climbed to number 3 in the UK charts, where it charted for 10 weeks in the Top 10.

His song also charted in many countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Greece, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, France, and Ireland.

The BRIT awards are virtually the UK’s equivalent to the Grammy Awards hosted in the USA, celebrating the best of British music artists and welcoming international stars to the stage.

Digital Music Production Lecturer at New College, Will Brown, said: “What a fantastic achievement it is to be nominated in one of the categories at the Brit Awards. It was clear at an early stage in his course that S1mba had something special and was very talented.

“It's rare to find students as young as he is that have strong skills in all areas from song-writing to performance, engineering and production.

"Although we knew he was talented, we had not expected him to be so successful as he is today, although we know it's down to his hard working and humble nature - we can't wait to see what steps he takes next.”

S1mba was a student on the level 3 Digital Music Production at New College from 2017 to 2019.

Stuart Rowe, Digital Music Production Lecturer, who also taught S1mba during his course added: “It’s no surprise to us that S1mba has made such a success of his music as he’s always shown great dedication, determination and passion for developing as a musician.

“He was a very talented and hard working student and we are very proud of his continued success.”

The hit song that S1mba received his nomination for has more than 20 million views on YouTube and more than 187,794,204 million Spotify plays.
