Bewley chief inspires students with visit to college

Construction students at New College Swindon recently welcomed Bewley Homes COO Peter Carpinelli as part of a week-long series of industry talks organised by the college.

The visit brought together carpentry and bricklaying students who were keen to hear first-hand about careers in construction, progression routes, and life in the housebuilding sector. Carpinelli took time to answer questions, share career advice, and encourage students to pursue their ambitions with confidence.

Feedback from students, led by second-year bricklaying student, Mason Wallace, was overwhelmingly positive, with many describing the visit as both “inspiring” and highly informative.

The 18-year-old is studying Level 1 Bricklaying and commented: “Peter was very professional. We immediately tuned in as he was a good communicator and spoke to us like adults. He was engaging, open and honest, and had an interesting story about his career in housebuilding. He has clearly done very well.

“The way he explained the path forward and setting goals was inspiring and encouraging, and it was the highlight of a week-long series of industry talks that the college organised. I would describe him as a ‘modern-day Sir Alex Ferguson’ of the housebuilding industry without the infamous ‘hair dryer’ treatment!”

He added: “It was great to meet someone who’s worked their way up in the industry and hear about their experiences first-hand. It really helped us understand what’s possible after college and what employers are looking for. I’m sure many of us came away feeling motivated.”

Students highlighted the value of connecting classroom learning with real-world experience, noting that the session helped them better understand potential career pathways within construction.

Carpinelli, who grew up locally, still lives in Swindon and attended St Joseph’s Secondary School in the 1980s, said: “It was a pleasure to return to the college and spend time with the students who just need a bit of direction to go with everything they learn in the classroom. It’s so important that we support and encourage the next generation as they begin their careers in housebuilding.”

Daniel Shorter, head of faculty for Trades and Technology at New College Swindon also praised the visit, highlighting its positive effect on student motivation and confidence.

He said: “Opportunities like this are incredibly important for our students. Hearing directly from industry professionals helps bring their learning to life and gives them a clearer sense of direction for the future. We’re very grateful to Peter and Bewley Homes for taking the time to visit us.”

The visit forms part of Bewley Homes’ ongoing commitment to supporting local communities and nurturing the next generation of construction talent.
