Last week, Rossi, the adorable rescue Labrador, spaniel cross made his first appearance in the base room (for Pre16’s) to help alleviate anxiety and be a distraction to those who may be struggling with college or things at home.
Since 2006, New College Swindon’s Pre16 warm and welcoming department has been providing a flexible student-centred programme for electively home-educated young people. Offering a source of support to this group of young people offers them the opportunity to learn in a structured environment, and unlock their potential in a way that may not have been possible in their previous learning environment. The College gives Pre16 students the chance to experience college life and the range of impressive cutting-edge study options available to them at Level 3 and beyond, which is often a motivator to continue their studies.
The Pre16 team saw fantastic growth in GCSE results over the summer with English and Maths results bucking the declining national trend and seeing 5% growth over national rates, highlighting the importance of the care and dedication that the Pre16 Team offer their students.
Rossi is just 16 months old and was adopted by Carla Sweeny – Pre16 Co-ordinator at the College, after working closely with the Dogs Trust to find the right dog for the job! Due to no fault of his own, Rossi’s owners didn’t have the time to walk him due to their other family commitments, but he is now spoilt for choice of walkers at the College.
The Pre16 Team at New College Swindon is barking with excitement as they welcome their newest and most pawesome team member!
Pre16 Coordinator, Carla Sweeney, said “Rossi is going to help many students find their independence. Taking on this new responsibility is exciting and comforting. He’s only been here one day so far, but you can see the difference his presence makes to the students.”
