About the course
T Levels are brand new courses developed in collaboration with employers and businesses so that the content meets the needs of industry and prepares you for work. For those interested in developing a career in a science laboratory environment, this course will allow you to develop the core knowledge and skills required. Your understanding will be assessed through an examination and core skills through a practical employer-set project. In addition to this, maths, English and general digital skills will be integrated within the qualification in occupationally relevant contexts.
The specialist pathway is ‘Laboratory Sciences’. You will complete a placement in a relevant business organisation in order to relate theory to practice.
In the first year you will be covering the core components of the course which include working in the science sector, and aspects of physics ( radioactivity, electronics, materials, chemistry ( atomic theory, chromatography, titration analysis, catalysts and chemistry practical techniques) and biology (microbiology, infectious diseases and immunity, staining techniques and cell analysis, genetics and DNA)
At the end of the first year you will be assessed by 2 written examinations and employer set projects which contains synoptic analysis, some practical work and data analysis.
During the two years, a minimum of 45 days of work placement is undertaken.
At the end of the second year a set of synoptic assignments and tasks are performed in an examination format, linked to Laboratory science as an occupational specialism.
You must be 16 years old and wish to proceed to university or professional training. Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including GCSE Triple Science at grades 555 or above and grades 55 in combined Science. GCSE Maths at grade 5 is also required.
Students who achieve this qualification could progress to the following:
• employment : entry level Laboratory technologist
• higher education
A fully competent Laboratory Scientist will be able to work in a wide range of organisations, including but not exclusively, chemical, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, formulated products, nuclear and analytical services. A Laboratory Scientist can carry out a range of technical and scientific activities which may include laboratory based investigations and scientific experimentation in their specialist field.
Work experience and employability
You will complete practical experience in placement settings across the 2 year programme. This will allow you to apply theory to real-world practice.
What additional resources will I need?
You will require stationary and a Memory Stick and a willingness to travel and work both on the Queens Drive campus and in Laboratory settings.
