About the course

This is a vocational course, so you will learn about the sports industry and the skills necessary to go on to Higher Education (degree courses or Higher National Certificates and Diplomas), or direct to employment.

Sport and Exercise Sciences aims to provide you with the knowledge and understanding of theoretical and practical aspects of Sports Science. It will involve you working in a variety of situations, so that you can develop a sense of responsibility towards your career path and learning process.

Units in this course include: Anatomy for Sport and Exercise; Research Methods for Sport & Exercise; Sports Nutrition; Fitness Testing for Sport & Exercise; Sport and Exercise Psychology; Sport Injuries; Exercise Health and Lifestyle; Practical Sport Performance; Sport and Exercise Physiology; Sports Biomechanics.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 4 including Maths, English Language & Science.

Where next?

A growing number of Universities and Colleges of Higher Education offer degrees and diplomas in Sport Therapy, Sport Science, Sport Business and Sport Coaching. Other avenues for career opportunity may include the Health Service, Private Health and Fitness Clubs, Sports Development Officers and Personal training.

Work experience and employability

This course does contain a specific work experience unit in year 2 and learners are encouraged to find their own placements. Assistance from the Employability team is also available.

What additional resources will I need?

External visits to a range of sporting facilities and conferences will require a voluntary contribution. You will need to provide your own stationary, computer storage device, etc. A New College Sports top is required for practical sessions at an approximate cost of £10.00 each. Financial assistance may be available for eligible learners.

Fees information

This course is free to students aged 16-18.

Students aged 19+ will usually be charged a tuition fee, unless they meet certain eligibility criteria for fee remission. For those paying, an Advanced Learner Loan may be available. For further advice on fees, waivers and loans, please contact the Fees Co-Ordinator at Queens Drive.
