This A Level is included within the following A Level pathways as a recommended core subject: Environment, Geography and Earth Science; Medical Health; STEM and Healthcare.
It is included in the following pathways as a recommeded additional subject: Creative Studies; Maths, Physics and Computer Science; Social Sciences. However, you can take Biology with any A Level/equivalent combination, there is plenty of choice and flexibility.
Biology is the study of all living things â from single cells to human beings. The course is divided into six interesting modules, each covering key concepts and exploring their applications. You will learn practical skills, undertake investigations and develop your knowledge and skills in all these areas: Practical skills; Foundations in Biology; Exchange and transport; Biodiversity, evolution and disease; Communication, homeostasis and energy; Genetics and ecosystems.
You will study the course for 4.5 hours a week in the first year and 5 hours a week in the second year. You should expect to spend an additional 4.5 hours per week on homework and private study. Mock exams are held during the first year (in February/March), but do not count towards the final A Level. Exams for the whole A level are held in May or June of the second year.
Entry requirements
Five GCSEs at grade 4/C or above, including grade 6/B in Biology or Additional Science or grades 6-6 in Combined Science. English and Maths at grade 5/C are also required.
Future career and study opportunities
Biology is a scientific subject and will allow you to acquire a range of practical and analytical skills that are useful for many jobs. It combines well with other science subjects and can lead to exciting careers in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, veterinary science, marine biology, environmental science, food and many other science-related fields.
