This course is for anyone wanting a career in the carpentry and wood trades sector. It covers the practical skills and knowledge needed to become a carpenter and will prepare you for further training in the industry.
You will learn about all aspects of the trade, including: health, safety and welfare, technical information, communication and understanding more about construction technology. You will also develop key practical skills such as woodworking joints and the use and preparation of carpentry tools.
Throughout the course you will take part in demonstrations, practical work, theory lessons, computer sessions, tutorials and project work. You will also have timetabled sessions in English, maths, work experience and enrichment as part of your study programme.
This qualification is assessed through multiple choice knowledge tests and practical assignments.
Entry requirements
You will need four GCSEs at grade 2/E or above including maths and English.
Future career and study opportunities
On successful completion of this course, you will be able to progress onto a Level 2 qualification in. Alternatively, you could move into an apprenticeship and develop your skills and knowledge âon the jobâ.
Work experience/Careers Extra
As part of your study programme, you will complete 30 hours of work experience â giving you the chance to develop your practical skills and understanding of the workplace.

All Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided, including safety boots and a hi-vis waistcoat. You will need to provide your own stationary.
