Network Engineer Apprenticeship (Level 4)

The primary role of a network engineer is to design, install, maintain and support communication networks within an organisation or between organisations. Network engineers need to maintain high levels of operation of communication networks in order to provide maximum performance and availability for their users, such as staff, clients, customers and suppliers. They will understand network configuration, cloud, network administration and monitoring tools, and be able to give technical advice and guidance.

Network Technician, Network Engineer, Systems Engineer, Network Administrator.

Programme Requirements:

Individual employers will set the selection criteria, but this is likely to include A levels; a level 3 apprenticeship or other relevant qualifications; relevant experience and/or an aptitude test with a focus on functional maths. We have to make sure that the Apprentice has the potential to achieve the different elements that make up the Apprenticeship qualification, and that they are working at the right level in their job role. It is a requirement to complete an initial assessment in English and Maths, and this may lead to taking some additional diagnostic assessments.

Typical Duration:

24 months to complete, depending on the employer and apprentice needs.

Apprenticeship Content:

This apprenticeship standard has been developed with the help of employers such as IBM, Accenture, BA, BT, Capgemini, Cisco, Fujitsu, HP, John Lewis, Lloyds, Microsoft, NCA, The Royal Signals, Telefonica, The Test Factory, Virgin Media, Visa, BCS - Chartered Institute of IT.

There are a number of elements to each Apprenticeship and this is called a Standard. This Standard includes:

A knowledge based qualification:

  • Certificate in Network Principles

  • MCP Server 2012 (Vendor qualification)

  • Certificate in Network Security

On Programme Assessment:

  • Portfolio of evidence

  • Assessment of behaviours and skills

  • Technical knowledge and understanding

  • Technical competencies

Functional Skills:

  • Maths, English at Level 2

End-point assessment:

  • Synoptic project

  • Summative portfolio

  • Employer reference

  • Interview
