About the course

This course will help you to answer questions such as “How do human bodies respond to changes inside them and to their environment?”, “What are animals and plants built from?” and “How does exercise affect the exchanges taking place within the body?”

We will also discuss of the development of scientific ideas and the environmental, social and ethical issues associated with technological advances.

  • Cell Biology
  • Organisation
  • Infections and response
  • Bioenergetics
  • Homeostasis and response
  • Inheritance, variation and evolution
  • Ecology

Entry requirements

Grade 4/C GCSE in Core Science, or a grade 3/D in Additional Science/Biology, grade 3/D in Combined Science/Biology or show that you have the necessary potential in a diagnostic test.

Where next?

A grade 6/B will enable you to take A Level Biology, and with grade 5/C, you could go on to BTEC Applied Science, A Level Environmental Studies or A Level Psychology, if you have another science.

It will also count as a Science GCSE if you need one for Higher Education (e.g. a teaching course).

Work experience and employability

This course does not contain a specific work experience component, but has other activities to help you develop employability skills. If you would like to undertake a work placement alongside your studies, our Employability Team can help.

What additional resources will I need?

You will be expected to supply your own stationery and you may want to purchase a textbook. You may also be asked to contribute to any courses and visits in which you take part.

Fees information

This course is free to students aged 16-18.

Students aged 19+ will usually be charged a tuition fee, unless they meet certain eligibility criteria for fee remission. For those paying, an Advanced Learner Loan may be available. For further advice on fees, waivers and loans, please contact the Fees Co-Ordinator at Queens Drive.
