AQA GCSE in Art and Design
Length: 1 year

Through studying GCSE Art and Design you will have the opportunity to investigate a range of disciplines, including:
- Craft and Design
- Fine Art
- Graphic Design
- Textile design
- 3D design.
The flexibility of the course ensures that you will be challenged and encouraged to explore all of the elements of Art and Design. You will complete a range of creative and exciting projects which will culminate in a Portfolio of work that you can use to progress to either A Level’s or Vocational subjects in Art and Design related subjects.
This exciting GCSE course allows you to develop a knowledge and understanding of techniques and experiences using professional standard equipment and taught by industry professionals. At New College Swindon you will have access to dedicated facilities including a Print Room, Ceramics Studio, Photography Studio, Graphic Design suite and Textiles Studio.
If you obtained mainly 3/D grades at GCSE, you can undertake a package of GCSEs.
New College Swindon offers a wide range of Art and Design courses at L3/A Level. With five GCSE’s at Grade 4 you could progress to:
- A Level Fine Art
- A Level Graphics and Illustration
- A Level Product Design
- A Level Textiles
- L3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design (equivalent to 3 A Levels)
- L3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design (Photography)
- L3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design (Graphic Design)
- L3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design (Textiles and Fashion)
- L3 Extended Diploma in Media Make-up
- L3 Extended Diploma in Creative Digital Media (Games Design)
Work experience and employability
This course does not contain a specific work experience component, but has other activities to help you develop employability skills e.g. live client briefs, competitions, exhibitions, visiting speakers etc. If you would like to undertake a work placement alongside your studies, our Employability Team can help you.
What additional resources will I need?
GCSE Art and Design students will have access to all of the resources they need for their course. However if students wish to purchase their own art kit, we do have them available to purchase.
This course is free to students aged 16-18.
Students aged 19+ will usually be charged a tuition fee, unless they meet certain eligibility criteria for fee remission. For further advice on fees, waivers and loans, please contact the Fees Co-Ordinator at Queens Drive.
