About the course
Functional Skills Distance Learning courses enable you to boost your career with a nationally recognised qualification and is equivalent to GCSE grade C/4.
You will work your way through the qualification using our on-line learning platform with tutor support. You will also complete mock tests which are marked and feedback will be provided. You can complete your qualification within 12 weeks, depending on ability.
The qualification is split into three areas:
Using numbers and the number system – whole numbers, fractions, decimals and percentages
Using common measures, shapes and space
Handling information and data
There are two assessment papers, a 25 minute non-calculator paper and 90 minute calculator paper, both are completed on-line and at home; both papers are taken in the same sitting.
You will be required to download a piece of software which will allow our invigilator access to your PC. They must be able to clearly see you and the room you are using so please ensure you have a good quality webcam. The assessment will not run if visibility is poor.
One free re-sit is provided as part of this qualification.
You must have GCSE Grade D/E or 3/2, or Functional Skills Level 1
Learners who are aged 19-23 must already have a full Level 2 qualification (5 GCSEs 4 and above OR A*-C, 2 AS Levels, 1 A-Level, Diploma Level 2, NVQ Level 2).
You will be asked to complete a diagnostic assessment before enrolling. This is to ensure you are working at the correct level and are able to cope with studying independently on-line.
Distance Learning isn’t for everyone. If at your enrolment we feel that this mode of study may not be quite right for you, we will help you to find the one that is.
The course is fully funded by the Government and to qualify, you must be aged 19 at the start of the academic year, have been resident in England for the last three years and be a UK citizen.
If you don’t have English GCSE/Level 2, you may wish to consider this qualification.
This qualification can be completed alongside an Access to HE course, or required if you move onto university but don’t hold a GCSE grade C/4.
This qualification will improve your career options. You’ll be able to apply for positions where the pre-requisite for the position is maths GCSE or equivalent.
What additional resources will I need?
A good quality laptop/PC.
An internet connection that can support virtual learning, minimum 3 mbps.
A webcam if your PC or lap top does not have a camera, at least 480p quality video.
