A Level English Language and Literature

Full Time

About the course

This A Level is included within the following A Level pathways as a RECOMMENDED CORE subject: English and Communications; Law and Legal. It is included in the following pathways as a RECOMMENDED ADDITIONAL SUBJECT: Business and Entrepreneurship; Creative Studies; Design and Media; Environment, Geography and Earth Science; Financial Academy; Humanities; Medical Health; Performing Arts; Social Sciences. However, you can choose English Language and Literature with any A Level/equivalent combination (with the exception of other English A Levels)– there is plenty of choice and flexibility.

English aims to develop your awareness of the ways we communicate: how people talk and how authors write for different purposes and audiences. During the course, you will study a range of fiction, non-fiction, poetry and drama in different styles, and from different periods.

You will study texts using integrated literary and linguistic approaches. We will look at the way writers communicate their ideas in a variety of forms, including newspapers, letters, television, the theatre, speeches and advertisements. Regular reading of newspapers is essential for you to develop an awareness of current affairs and attitudes in society.

You will study the course for 4.5 -5 hours per week (4.5 hours in the first year and 5 hours in the second) and should expect to spend an additional 4.5 hours per on homework and private study. Mock exams are held during the first year (in February/March), but do not count towards the final A Level. Exams for the whole A level are held in May or June of the second year.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 4/C or above, including one grade 5/C in either English Language or English Literature. If you have not previously studied GCSE English Literature, then a grade 5 in English Language will be accepted. A strong interest in how language works, enjoyment of reading, discussion and a desire to develop your writing skills.

Where next?

An A Level in English can lead to a Higher Education course in this or a related subject. It is also helpful in any career that needs an understanding of human relationships and social issues alongside good communication skills - media, management, teaching, law, social and probation work are some examples.

Work experience and employability

This course does not contain a specific work experience component but has other activities to help you develop employability skills. If you would like to undertake a work placement alongside your studies, our Employability Team can help.

What additional resources will I need?
