About the course

This qualification develops independent, vocationally aware learners through the right balance of teaching/learning and assessment. The qualification supports a curriculum where learners are able to continually revisit their approaches to the making and understanding of art and design practice, adding levels of refinement, sophistication and precision to their practice as they progress.

There are two learning and teaching modules, and one in the additional module in the Extended Diploma which include: Exploring and developing creative media skills; Advancing creative practice; Critical self-appraisal.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs Grade 4 or above including English, Maths and Art or a Level 2 at Merit.

Where next?

Progress to our Foundation Diploma in Art and Design, an HND in Textiles and Fashion or related Art and Design specialisms or employment.

Work experience and employability

This course does not contain a specific work experience component, but has other activities to help you develop employability skills. If you would like to undertake a work placement alongside your studies, our Employability Team can help.

What additional resources will I need?

There is a studio fee of £50 payable each year, which contributes towards workshop materials and specialist consumables. Students will be expected to bring a personal kit to each session.

Fees information

This course is free to students aged 16-18.

Students aged 19+ will usually be charged a tuition fee, unless they meet certain eligibility criteria for fee remission. For those paying, an Advanced Learner Loan may be available. For further advice on fees, waivers and loans, please contact the Fees Co-Ordinator at Queens Drive.

  • There is a £40.00 studio fee which is payable at the start of the course to cover the cost of all materials used in workshops throughout the year.

  • Two hardback A3 sketchbooks (2 x £7.50 from the art department)

Students will be expected as part of the course to attend trips to museums and galleries; an additional charge for this is made (approximately £15 -£20 per trip) to cover the travel and ticket cost for these events. Students experiencing financial hardship can apply for equipment grants via student services. Kits are available through Artway Supplies.
