About the course

Chemistry is the study of the composition, structure, properties and interaction of chemicals. These basic ideas in Chemistry are used to study some interesting topics in the Environment and Materials.

You will cover the following topics: Atomic structure and the periodic table; Bonding structure and the properties of matter; Quantitative Chemistry; Chemical Changes; Energy Changes; The rate and extent of chemical change; Organic Chemistry; Chemical analysis; Chemistry in the atmosphere; Using recourses

Entry requirements

Grade 4/C in Core Science, or grade 3/D in Additional Science/Chemistry, grade 3/D in Combined Science/Chemistry or show that you have the necessary potential in a diagnostic test.

Where next?

A GCSE in Chemistry is useful for scientific areas of work. Many non-scientific employers also appreciate it. A Grade 6 will enable you to take A Level Chemistry, and with a grade 4 you could go onto the BTEC Applied Science or A Level Psychology if you have another Science GCSE.

Work experience and employability

This course does not contain a specific work experience component, but has other activities to help you develop employability skills. If you would like to undertake a work placement alongside your studies our Employability Team can help.

What additional resources will I need?

You will be expected to supply your own stationery and you may want to purchase a textbook. You may also be asked to contribute to any courses and visits in which you take part.

Fees information

This course is free to students aged 16-18.

Students aged 19+ will usually be charged a tuition fee, unless they meet certain eligibility criteria for fee remission. For those paying, an Advanced Learner Loan may be available. For further advice on fees, waivers and loans, please contact the Fees Co-Ordinator at Queens Drive.
