About the course

The BTEC National in Applied Science provides a specialist work-related programme of study that covers key knowledge and practical skills needed to work as a technician within a science based employment.

You will study a combination of core and specialist units. Specialist units may vary from those shown below

Core Units: Principles and Applications of Science; Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques; Science Investigation Skills; Laboratory Techniques and their Application; Principles and Applications of Science; Investigative Project; Contemporary Issues in Science

Specialist Units: Physiology of Human Body Systems; Medical Physics Applications; Biological Molecules and Metabolic Pathways (Optional Internally Assessed Unit); Astronomy and Space Science; Microbiology and Microbiological techniques (Optional Internally Assessed Unit); Forensic Evidence, Collection and Analysis;

Entry requirements

At least two grade 4/Cs in Combined Science or grade 44 in Core & Additional Science for the Extended Certificate and at least two grade 5s for the Extended Diploma.

Where next?

Applied Science will give you the knowledge, understanding and skills for success in a job, apprenticeship or progression to university.

Work experience and employability

If you take the Extended Diploma, you will have the opportunity to spend time in the work place. Our Employability Team will help you with this.

If you take the Extended Certificate work experience is optional. Both courses will have visits to local science based companies and employers will deliver talks to you in college.

What additional resources will I need?

You may choose to buy a lab coat (cost approximately £10) and a text book (cost approximately £30).

Fees information

This course is free to students aged 16-18.

Students aged 19+ will usually be charged a tuition fee, unless they meet certain eligibility criteria for fee remission. For those paying, an Advanced Learner Loan may be available. For further advice on fees, waivers and loans, please contact the Fees Co-Ordinator at Queens Drive.
