About the course
This course is for people interested in working with children from birth to seven years, 11 months. You will develop the skills needed for a wide range of careers that involve the care and education of young children. The course involves realistic assignments and projects which are directly linked to the work experience. This gives you the opportunity to practice skills and develop teamwork.
Foundation Diploma Year one includes: 6 core units
Extended Diploma Year two includes: 12 core units and 4 specialist optional units, including:
- Child development
- The early years foundation stage
- Keeping children safe
- Play and learning
- Observation, assessment and planning.
Five GCSEs grade 4/C or above, including English Language and Maths. Students with equivalent qualifications or experience may be considered on individual merits. Progression onto the second year of the Foundation Diploma / Extended Diploma course is dependent on your achievements during Year 1, including a minimum of 90% attendance, and successful completion of your first placement and tutor report.
This course can lead directly to jobs in Early Years education. You may find work as a nursery nurse or childcare worker, with voluntary and private agencies or with families. You may also be able to access Higher Education, and progress to professional training in Early Years, such as Infant or Primary school teaching.
Work experience and employability
Work experience placements are valuable to develop your employability skills and enhance your CV. This course includes an assessed work experience component.
Students on the National Diploma will gain practical experience throughout the course, in a minimum of three different placement settings. Learners MUST spend a minimum of 100 hours in each placement and a minimum of 750 placement hours is required across the two years. During your course, your placement days will be completed over two full days each week.
What additional resources will I need?
You will be expected to cover the travel costs. You may want to buy some of the textbooks. You will need to buy a New College T-shirt to wear in placement, at a cost of £11.
This course is free to students aged 16-18.
Students aged 19+ will usually be charged a tuition fee, unless they meet certain eligibility criteria for fee remission. For those paying, an Advanced Learner Loan may be available. For further advice on fees, waivers and loans, please contact the Fees Co-Ordinator at Queens Drive.
