About the course

Students will work in a variety of different Art & Design disciplines including Drawing and Mark Making, Print, Graphic Design, Illustration, 3D, Textiles & Fashion and Lens Based/Photography. Students will gain a broader understanding of the of Art and Design industry through practical workshops, competitions, briefs and live briefs. Students will follow a varied programme of study which will include learning about working in the art and design industry, 2D & 3D visual communication skills, building an art portfolio and professional practice, using ideas to explore develop and produce art and design and contextual references in Art and Design.

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs at Grade 3 and a portfolio of artwork.

Where next?

The Level 2 Diploma in Art and Design at Merit can lead onto Level 3 qualifications such as BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design, BTEC Level 3 Textiles, Fashion, Costume & Interiors, BTEC Level 3 Photography & Lens Based, or A Level Art & Design courses in Textiles & Fashion, Graphic Design product Design, Fine Art or Photography.

The minimum entry requirement for BTEC Level 3 courses is 4 GCSES at grade 4 including maths and English Language, or a level 2 Diploma at Merit and GCSE maths and English at grade 4 and a portfolio of artwork.

Work experience and employability

This course does not contain a specific work experience component, but has other activities to help you develop employability skills. If you would like to undertake a work placement alongside your studies our Employability Team can help.

What additional resources will I need?

 Students can buy art materials and personal kits through Artway.

Additional costs (approximately £15-£20) for trips may incur.

Fees information

This course is free to students aged 16-18.

Students aged 19+ will usually be charged a tuition fee, unless they meet certain eligibility criteria for fee remission. For those paying, an Advanced Learner Loan may be available. For further advice on fees, waivers and loans, please contact the Fees Co-Ordinator at Queens Drive.
