About the course

Designed especially for mature students who have had a break from their studies (of 1 year or more), an Access to Higher Education Diploma will enable you to bridge the gap between your current qualifications and a degree-level course or develop the skills and knowledge for a new career.

You can choose one of these subjects:

Psychology: Introduction to Psychology and Research Methods, Developmental Psychology, Social Psychology, Cognitive Psychology and Atypical Psychology

Sociology: Households, roles, relationships, recent changes, the sociology of Health, Crime and Deviance, Education and Poverty and Welfare.

English Literature: Introduction to Modern Drama, The Nineteenth Century Novel, Themes in Poetry, Shakespeare, Response to Literary text

Geography: Tourism, Population, Rivers, Villages and Towns and The Weather

History: Germany in the 1920s & 1930s, American History including the Civil Rights Decade and Vietnam War, British History: the English Civil Wars, Britain and the 1960s and the ‘Thatcher Decade’

Chemistry: Medicine Analysis, Core Chemistry and Organic & Thermo Chemistry

Physics: Core Physics, Radiotherapy, Thermal Energy & Electricity and Physics- Mechanics & Motion

Biology: Nutrition, Digestion and Diet, Human Health and Disease, Cells and Molecular Biology and Contemporary Issues

Maths: Algebra, Graphs, Trigonometry and Statistics

Mandatory ungraded subjects include: Study Skills and Basic IT.

Entry requirements

You must be aged 19 or over, have had at least one year break from education and have either GCSE Maths or GCSE English Language at grades A*-C (or grade 9-4).

Where next?

A career in teaching or education. HNC/HND in Early Years at New College, degree in specialist academic subject followed by PGCE or a Bachelor of Education with QTS (Qualified Teacher Status).

Fees information

You may wish to access the Advanced Learner Loan where the Government cover the course fees, only repayable when you’re earning over £26,575. Student Finance England will ‘write off’ any outstanding Advanced Learner Loan balances you owe for an Access to HE course once you complete a Higher Education course. This means you don’t have to repay it.
