This A Level is included within the following A Level pathways as a recommended Core subject: Maths, Physics and Computer Science; Medical Health; STEM and Healthcare. It is included in the following pathways as a Recommended Additional Subject: Design and Media; Environment, Geography and Earth Science. However, you can take Physics with any A Level/equivalent combination, there is plenty of choice and flexibility.
Physics explores the properties of matter and energy, their interactions, and the forces that shape the universe. In Year One you will study a range of exciting topics including: Practical Skills; Foundations of Physics; Forces and Motion; Electrons, Waves and Photons; An introduction to Quantum Physics.
You will then build on these in Year Two with topics including: The Newtonian World and Astro Physics; Particles and Medical Physics; Electric fields and Electromagnetic induction; Exponential decay in capacitators and radioactivity; How images are produced for medical applications.
You will study the course for 4.5 hours a week in the first year and 5 hours a week in the second year. You should expect to spend an additional 4.5 hours per week on homework and private study. Mock exams are held during the first year (in February/March), but do not count towards the final A Level. Exams for the whole A level are held in May or June of the second year.
We also recommended that you study engineering as an extra course, as the majority of its content is in A Level Maths and A Level Physics. This is an additional two hours a week for two years and you will gain the equivalent of half an A Level.
Entry requirements
Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including Physics or Additional Science at grade 6/B, or GCSE grades 6-6 or above in combined Science. GCSE Maths at grade 6/B is also required.
Future career and study opportunities
A Level Physics is viewed extremely positively by university admissions tutors and gaining this qualification will be a real benefit when you apply for a degree course. This subject is also essential for most engineering and science degrees, which can lead to many exciting career opportunities including medicine, dentistry and veterinary sciences.

You will be expected to supply your own stationery and you may want to purchase a textbook. Contributions may also be required for extra activities and visits you wish to take part in.
