This A Level is included within the following A Level pathways as a recommended core subject: Environment, Geography and Earth Science.
It is included in the following pathways as a recommended additional subject: Business and Entrepreneurship; Engineering; STEM and Healthcare. However, you can choose Environmental Science with any A Level/equivalent combination, there is plenty of choice and flexibility.
You will study the impact of human activity on the environment and explore ways in which we can help create a sustainable future. This course takes a scientific approach to the study of the environment, looking at what impacts it, how humans manage it and the many sustainability issues affecting it.
Topics in Year One include The Living Environment and The Physical Environment. Then topics in Year Two include: Energy Resources and Environment Pollution; Biological Resources Sustainability.
Your classes will involve presentations, debate and discussions. You will be encouraged to carry out research and keep up to date with current environmental issues.
You will study the course for 4.5 hours a week in the first year and 5 hours a week in the second year. You should expect to spend an additional 4.5 hours per week on homework and private study. Mock exams are held during the first year (in February/March), but do not count towards the final A Level. Exams for the whole A level are held in May or June of the second year.
Entry requirements
Five GCSEs at grade 4/C or above, including Biology or Combined/Additional Science and grade 4/C or above in English and Maths. You must also achieve grade 5 in at least one of these subjects, preferably in GCSE Sciences. A GCSE in Geography would be helpful, but not essential.
Future career and study opportunities
At a time when sustainability, climate change and net zero are high on the political and public agenda, there is great demand in industry for people who understand the environmental challenges that are being faced. Many jobs in the green industries are being created, with a vast number of career opportunities on offer. This A Level will enable you to progress onto an environmental science or sustainable development degree at university, as well onto an apprenticeship or other higher level technical qualification â enabling you to pursue an exciting career in this sector.

You will be expected to supply your own stationery and you may want to purchase a textbook. Contributions may also be required for extra activities and visits you wish to take part in.
