About the course
This eight week course will provide an informative and enriching introduction to art history, from the 15th Century to today. Through a combination of talks and interactive activities, participants will be introduced to key artists, movements and themes within art history, and will leave the course with a well rounded understanding of how composition and context can shape a work of art. A visit to Swindon Museum and Art Gallery will be offered, with a talk from the curator (if government guidelines around Covid-19 allow such an event to happen).
Core art historical terms and movements will be defined throughout the course and a development of analytical skills will be developed through group activities. Most importantly, an appreciation of art, what it has to tell us about the context in which it was created, and confidence in forming individual interpretations of artworks, are key outcomes. Sessions will include:
- Innovators of the Renaissance
- Drama and Dynamism: Mannerism and the Baroque
- Rivals and Revolution: Rococo, Neoclassicism and Romanticism
- Giants of Modernism: Realism, Impressionism and Post-Impressionism
- Twentieth Century ‘isms’: From Cubism to Sensationalism
- Light and Landscape: A Whistle-Stop Tour
- The Body in Art: From Botticelli to Bourgeois
