Software Engineering FdSc Level 5

This Foundation degree will prepare you for a specialist role as a Software Engineer and enable you to progress onto Level 6 BSc (Hons) in Digital & Technology Solutions.

A practical and specialist pathway, this course covers a wide range of areas covering all aspects of software development. You will design, build and test software solutions, apply engineering principles to all stages of the software development process, and explore security robustness.

You will also create artefacts, perform actions and tests to improve quality and efficiency, and produce tools for configuration management, version control and software build. You will work in teams and collaborate with others, developing many employability and transferable skills needed in the workplace.

To support your career progression, the structure of this progamme includes modules of work-based learning at level four and a project module at level five. This will help you connect to real life, real work situations and opportunities – making you a truly valuable employee.

This course sits within a suite of four Foundation Degrees, all designed to provide you with the knowledge, skills, and professional behaviours needed to progress into the field of professional computing.

Assessment will be via portfolios, artefacts and presentations as well as reports and open book exams - all of which are reflective of real work situations. You will gain effective communication skills throughout the programme.

In Year One you will study: Computers and Security, Principles of Programming, Maths for Data Science, Systems Design & Development and complete an Independent Work-Based Project.

Then Year Two will cover: Professional Issues, Managing the Security of Information, Agile Development and Further Programming, Software Engineering and Algorithms and Data Structures. You will also undertake a work experience placement.
