Professional Accounting Level 4 Diploma
The purpose of the AAT Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting is to enhance the skills developed from the AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting qualification.
The Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting offers technical training in accounting and is ideal for anyone wishing to pursue or progress their career in accountancy or finance, and enabling students to maximise opportunities in their current or new employment. By studying for this qualification, students will acquire professional accountancy and finance skills that will be useful throughout their careers.
Candidates study units including:
drafting financial statements for limited companies
having the knowledge and skills to use complex management accounting techniques
the ability to analyse accounting systems and their associated controls
having knowledge and skills in specialist accountancy and finance subjects
The Diploma in Professional Accounting is a competency based Education and Training Scheme offered by The Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT), the largest dedicated professional body for qualified accounting technicians.
The AAT Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting requires a Total Qualification time of 985 hours and Guided Learning hours of 390
The course is divided into five units:
Drafting and Interpreting Financial Statements - This unit provides students with the skills and knowledge for drafting the financial statements of single limited companies and consolidated financial statements for groups of companies.
Applied Management Accounting - This unit focuses on the three fundamental areas of management accounting: planning, control and decision making
Internal Accounting Systems and Controls - The unit teaches student to consider the role and responsibilities of the accounting function, including the needs of key stakeholders who use financial reports to make decisions.
Personal Tax - This unit provides students with the fundamental knowledge of the three most common taxes that affect taxpayers in the United Kingdom (UK): income tax, capital gains tax and inheritance tax.
Business Tax - This unit introduces students to UK taxation relevant to businesses, how to compute business taxes for sole traders, partnerships and limited companies.

Students are given tutorial support on a regular basis and may take advantage of the many learning facilities that the College has to offer, including internet access and Microsoft 365.
Entry requirements
Ideally, students should have completed AAT Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications and have a strong understanding of double entry bookkeeping.
Assessment methods
Students are assessed through Computer based exams, partially computer marked and partially human marked (all marked by the AAT). The results usually take 5 – 6 weeks.
Future career and study opportunities
Once qualified, and having met AAT’s criteria, students can apply for full AAT membership, which will allow them to use the designatory letters MAAT after their name.
A lot of universities offer exemptions to AAT students and for students who wish to become chartered accountants, the study of AAT qualifications may also offer exemptions from the exams required by a range of chartered accountancy bodies.
