This highly practical and creative course will help you develop the skills you need to be a professional photographer in the creative industries. From the creative imagery used by advertising photographers in magazines, to the compelling world of editorial photography, the camera's ability to record the world around us creates an unlimited number of career opportunities in the industry.
You will be taught by lecturers who are practitioners within the creative industry. You will have access to professional standard facilities of a photographic studio, professional lighting, black and white darkroom and film processing lab. This hands-on experience will allow you to transform your passion for photography into a creative profession.
You will visit regional museums and galleries and get the opportunity to shoot your own work. You will work on exciting projects that include research and academic writing – developing a range of technical skills, a personal style and enhancing your knowledge of the specialism.
Throughout your studies you will learn to be a team player, a confident communicator, an entrepreneurial problem solver, adaptable and self-directed. These are all essential employability skills, which will prepare you for your future career.
Entry requirements
Five GCSEs at grade 4/C or above including English Language. You do not need any previous experience, but real enthusiasm and a high level of commitment and curiosity are essential to succeed over the two-year course.
Future career and study opportunities
Successful completion of this course will enable you to progress to the one-year Foundation Diploma in Art & Design. This would enable you to build your portfolio and apply for an arts degree. Alternatively, you could apply directly to any relevant degree level course or apprenticeship.
Studying a visual arts subject can lead to a range of careers, including being a photographer, picture editor, gallery curator, post-production, graphic design, packaging, illustration, film making, media, fine art, animation, architecture and interior design.
