Photography A Level

This A Level is included within the following A Level pathways as a RECOMMENDED CORE subject: Creative Studies; Design and Media. It is included in the following pathways as a RECOMMENDED ADDITIONAL SUBJECT: Environment, Geography and Earth Science. However, you can take Photography with any A Level/equivalent combination, there is plenty of choice and flexibility.

This is a highly practical course and is ideal if you have a natural curiosity and interest in communicating your ideas through image making. Your will develop your skills as a photographer and learn about a range of genres, inspired by fascinating photography from throughout history. You will explore how the way we see ourselves, and the world we live in, has changed over time.

In Year One you will learn how to use a DSLR digital camera and develop and manipulate images in Photoshop; as well as shooting film on an SLR film camera, developing and printing in the darkroom. You will also experiment with photography techniques, research the work of other photographers and record your progress in presentations and exhibitions.

Then, in Year Two you will begin your Personal Investigation, which is 60% of your overall grade. This is on a theme of your choice and consists of a coursework presentation, a 1500-word Related Study and portfolio piece. Then in February, you will start your coursework exam, which forms the remaining 40% of your overall grade.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 4/C or above including English Language. You do not need any previous experience, but enthusiasm and a high level of commitment and curiosity are essential to succeed over the two-year course.

Future career and study opportunities

This A Level will enable you to progress onto Foundation Diploma in Art & Design, which will allow you to build on your portfolio – and then onto a degree in this field. Alternatively, you can use your A Levels to apply for any degree level course, apprenticeship or relevant employment.

Studying a visual arts subject can lead to a range of careers, including: a photographer, picture editor, gallery curator, post-production, graphic design, packaging, illustration, film making, media, fine art, animation, architecture and interior design.

Work experience/Careers Extra

This course does not contain a specific work experience component but many of the skills you will learn are essential to employability. Live client briefs, competitions, exhibitions and visiting speakers will enhance your creativity, alongside your technical, networking and team working skills.

If needed, our Employability Team can help you find local work placements that will support the course.

Additional resources/costs

We supply most resources, but you will need to buy some additional materials to develop and present your assessed portfolio work.

Some trips will also incur travel and entrance fees, but costs are kept to a minimum.
