Operational Departmental Management Level 5 Apprenticeship

An operations/departmental manager is someone who manages teams and/or projects. This role is accountable to a more senior manager or business owner. Organisations of all sizes and in all sectors have operations managers and specific responsibilities will vary, depending on the sector. However the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed are universal. Key areas will include: creating and delivering operational plans, managing projects, leading and managing teams, managing change, financial and resource management, talent management, coaching and mentoring.

This apprenticeship standard has been developed with the help of employers including: CMI, Acivico, Agillisys, Anglo Educational, Balfour Beatty, Barchester Healthcare, Barclays Bank, Boots UK Ltd, BBC, Civil Service, Codegent, Coop, Evolution Partnership, HMRC, Kinnerton Confectionery, NISA Retail Limited, One Stop, Opus Building Services, Sainsburys, Santander UK plc, Serco, umi Digital / Anglo Educational, Virgin Media, ILM, TUI, Markerstudy, Babcock, Gateshead Council, Lifetime.

There are a number of elements to each Apprenticeship, which is called a Standard. This Standard includes:

A knowledge-based qualification

  • Level 5 ILM Diploma in Principles of Leadership & Management

On Programme Assessment

  • Portfolio of evidence

  • Assessment of behaviours and skills

  • Team leadership

  • Organisational performance - delivering results

  • Personal effectiveness - managing self

  • Interpersonal excellence - managing people and developing relationships

Functional Skills

  • Maths, English at Level 2

End-point assessment

  • Portfolio of evidence

  • Competency-based interview

  • Professional discussion

  • Presentation

  • Test of knowledge using scenarios with questions

Entry requirements

You will need 5 GCSEs including Maths and English at grade 9 - 4 (A*- C) or be willing to undertake Functional Skills Level 2.

We do have to make sure that you have potential to achieve the different elements that make up the qualification, and that you are working at the right level in your job. It may be a requirement to complete an initial assessment in English and Maths, and this may lead to taking some additional diagnostic assessments and skills exams.

Future career and study opportunities

On completion of this apprenticeship you will be eligible to register as a full member with the Chartered Management Institute and/or the Institute of Leadership & Management. If/when you have three years’ of management experience, you can apply for Chartered Manager status through the CMI.
