Network Engineer Level 4 Apprenticeship

The main role of a network engineer is to design, install, maintain and support communication networks within an organisation or between organisations. Network engineers need to ensure that communication networks are working well, so that users – including staff, clients, customers and suppliers – have access to high performing systems.

Areas of expertise include: network configuration, cloud, network administration and monitoring tools, and being able to give technical advice and guidance.

Delivery and assessment

This apprenticeship standard has been developed with the help of employers such as: IBM, Accenture, BA, BT, Capgemini, Cisco, Fujitsu, HP, John Lewis, Lloyds, Microsoft, NCA, The Royal Signals, Telefonica, The Test Factory, Virgin Media, Visa, BCS - Chartered Institute of IT.

There are various elements to each Apprenticeship, which is called a Standard. This Standard includes:

A knowledge-based qualification

  • Certificate in Network Principles

  • MCP Server 2012 (Vendor qualification)

  • Certificate in Network Security

On Programme Assessment

  • Portfolio of evidence

  • Assessment of behaviours and skills

  • Technical knowledge and understanding

  • Technical competencies

Functional Skills

  • Maths, English at Level 2

End-point assessment

  • Synoptic project

  • Summative portfolio

  • Employer reference

  • Interview

Entry requirements

Individual employers will set the selection criteria, but this is likely to include A levels; a Level 3 apprenticeship or other relevant qualifications; relevant experience and/or an aptitude test with a focus on functional maths.

We do have to make sure that you have the potential to achieve the different elements that make up this qualification, and that you are working at the right level in your job. It may be a requirement to complete an initial assessment in English and Maths, and this may lead to taking some additional diagnostic assessments and skills exams.
