Music GCSE

This exciting course will develop your interest and understanding of how music is created, through a practical approach. It focuses on your abilities to listen to, perform, compose and appraise music through a wide variety of areas of study.

You study five different areas, giving you a greater knowledge and understanding of music. Topics include: My music; The Concerto through time; Rhythms of the World; Film Music; Conventions of Pop.

Entry requirements

Every application is considered on its own merits, but generally music reading (i.e. treble and bass clef), theoretical knowledge and performance equivalent to Grade 2 standard are required.

If you are interested in studying GCSE Music, please do talk to a member of staff to help assess your position and we can provide advice on the best way forward for you.

Future career and study opportunities

GCSE Music gives you a solid grounding for studying at higher level – enabling you to progress onto A Levels or another Level 3 course. However, it is also a great and enjoyable course in its own right. All instruments are accepted and your performance can be in any style of music you choose.

Work experience/Careers Extra

This course does not contain a specific work experience component but many of the skills you will learn are essential to employability.

If needed, our Employability Team can help you find local work placements that will support the course.

Additional resources/costs

You will be expected to supply your own stationery and you may want to purchase a textbook. You may also need to contribute to any courses and visits you take part in, but costs are kept to a minimum.
