You will need five GCSEs at grade 4/C, including English Language, Maths and Science. Alternatively, you can join this course with a Level 2 qualification (with Merit) in Animal Care (Merit in Biology).
On successful completion of this course, you can progress onto an apprenticeship or directly into employment. You may also want to consider further study at a higher level, including a degree in a relevant subject, such as Ecology & Conservation, Behaviour & Welfare, or Zoology.
Careers and job roles in this sector are varied and include: zookeeper, veterinary nurse, conservationist, animal nutritionist, kennels and catteries, grooming, animal rescue centres and an RSPCA Inspector.
A work placement is a crucial part of this course, with a requirement to carry out 350 hours over the two years of the qualification. This will help you to put your skills into practice and develop an understanding of the workplace. Placements also help you make links with employers, which can lead to job offers when your course comes to an end.
We work with many different employers, who provide work placements for our students, including: kennels, catteries, veterinary surgeries, wildlife centres and dog trainers. Our Employability team will help you prepare for and secure a work placement.
