Sport & Physical Activity Diploma

You will study a wide range of units, which are all internally assessed using different methods. Video analysis, presentations, unit tests and written reports are examples.

Yr1 - A total of nine units of which three are mandatory.

  • Anatomy and Physiology

  • Exercise, Health and Lifestyle

  • Sports Coaching

  • Preparing for a Career in Sport

  • Practical Team Sports

  • Fitness Training and Programming

  • Fitness Testing

  • Assessing Risks in Sport

  • Current Issues in Sport.

Yr2 – A further nine units are to be completed, including some specialist ones, such as:

  • Coaching Special Populations

  • Sports Massage

  • Sport as a Business

  • Sports Injuries

  • Sports Nutrition.

Entry requirements
  • Essential: 5 or more GCSE’s at Grade 4 or above, including English and Maths

  • Desirable: Science based subjects, GCSE PE or L2 vocational sports courses

  • Advisable: Current participation in sport and fitness.

Future career and study opportunities

You could progress to Higher Education courses at New College or undergraduate degrees at university, studying subjects such as Sports Coaching, Physical Education, Sports Science, Sports Therapy, Performance Analysis and Strength and Conditioning. The apprenticeship route or direct entry into employment is also possible, especially in Sports Coaching and the fitness industry. Throughout the course, you will develop employability skills and sport specific knowledge which will provide further opportunities to enter full-time employment.

Work experience/Careers Extra

You will be required to complete 35 hours of work experience each year. The Employability team and Careers staff can offer guidance and advice throughout. A block week is assigned to this part of your study programme, although further hours can be completed outside this time.

A New College Sports top for indoor sessions (approximate £12.00)

Outdoor footwear: Moulded boots for the 3G pitch.

Indoor footwear for sports hall and gym use.

Other suitable and appropriate sports kit.
