The BTEC National in Applied Science provides a specialist work-related programme of study that covers key knowledge and practical skills needed to work as a technician within a science based employment.
You will study a combination of core and specialist units. Specialist units may vary from those shown below
Core Units: Principles and Applications of Science; Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques; Science Investigation Skills; Laboratory Techniques and their Application; Principles and Applications of Science; Investigative Project; Contemporary Issues in Science.
Specialist Units: Physiology of Human Body Systems; Medical Physics Applications; Biological Molecules and Metabolic Pathways (Optional Internally Assessed Unit); Astronomy and Space Science; Microbiology and Microbiological techniques (Optional Internally Assessed Unit); Forensic Evidence, Collection and Analysis.
Entry requirements
At least two grade 4/Cs in Combined Science or two grade 5s for the Extended Diploma.

Applied Science will give you the knowledge, understanding and skills for success in a job, apprenticeship or progression to university.
Work experience/Careers Extra
If you take the Extended Diploma, you will have the opportunity to spend time in the work place. Our Employability Team will help you with this. The course has visits to local science-based companies and employers will deliver talks to you in College.
