Biology GCSE

This is an interesting course, covering a wide range of scientific ideas and topics relating to humans, animals and plants. This includes how our bodies respond to internal changes and to their environment, the effect of exercise on our bodies and what plants and animals are built from.

Specific course content covers: Cell Biology, Organisation, Infections and Response, Bioenergetics, Homeostasis and Response, Inheritance, Variation and Evolution and Ecology.

We will also discuss the development of scientific ideas and the environmental, social and ethical issues associated with technological advances.

Entry requirements

A GCSE grade 4/C in Core Science, or a grade 3/D in Additional Science/Biology or grade 3/D in Combined Science/Biology. If you don’t have these qualifications, we can consider if you have the necessary potential via a diagnostic test.

Work experience/Careers Extra

This course does not contain a specific work experience component but many of the skills you will learn are essential to employability. If needed, our Employability Team can help you find local work placements that will support the course.

Additional resources/costs

You will be expected to supply your own stationery and you may want to purchase a textbook. Contributions may also be required for extra activities and visits you wish to take part in.

Future career and study opportunities

This course can lead you to further study and ultimately a career in the sciences. If you achieve a grade 6/B, you can progress onto A Level Biology. With a grade 5/C (and an additional science), you could go on to BTEC Applied Science, T-levels, A Level Environmental Studies or A Level Psychology.

This course will also count as a Science GCSE if you need one for Higher Education (eg. for a teaching qualification)
