Our new GCSE English Language qualification has been designed to engage and motivate you, by using a range of interesting and relatable texts. You will undertake real-world writing tasks and study contemporary texts that are relevant to you – rather than the 19th Century literature covered in other courses.
We are one of the first further education colleges in Wiltshire to offer this new student-friendly course and are really excited about it.
This course will help develop your ability to write, speak and listen effectively, as well as reading and responding with understanding. You will study interesting 20th and 21st Century non-fiction, together with a range of other texts such as articles from newspapers and magazine. You will learn how to write an effective story and how to contribute well to a discussion – which will be assessed. We will help you to develop your vocabulary, grammatical accuracy, and your ability to express yourself clearly. These are all essential skills for your next steps in education and employment.
You will need a grade 2 in GCSE English, or a complete Level 1 Functional Skills English award (or equivalent). If you have studied Functional Skills English at New College in the last year, you may be able to join the GCSE course.
Future career and study opportunities
All employers and colleges recognise the value of being able to write fluently, accurately, and with a sense of purpose. GCSE English Language provides evidence of these skills and will help you progress onto the next stage of education or into an apprenticeship.
Work experience/Careers Extra
This course does not contain a specific work experience component but many of the skills you will learn are essential to employability. If needed, our Employability Team can help you find local work placements.
You will be expected to supply your own stationery and you may want to purchase a textbook. Contributions may also be required for extra activities and visits you wish to take part in.
