English Language GCSE (Part-Time)

This course will help improve your ability to write, speak and respond effectively, as well as developing your listening and reading skills.

You will study a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts, including newspapers. You will learn how to write in different ways, including stories and develop your vocabulary and grammar.

This course will support you to express yourself clearly and contribute effectively to discussions – which are key skills as you progress into further education and employment.

Entry requirements

A Grade 2 in GCSE English, or a complete Level 1 Functional Skills English award or equivalent. If you have studied Functional Skills English at New College in the last year, you may be eligible to join this GCSE course.

Work experience/Careers Extra

This course does not contain a specific work experience component but many of the skills you will learn are essential to employability. If needed, our Employability Team can help you find local work placements that will support the course.

Additional resources/costs

You will be expected to supply your own stationery and you may want to purchase a textbook. Contributions may also be required for extra activities and visits you wish to take part in.

Future career and study opportunities

Writing and speaking fluently and accurately, with a sense of purpose are key communication skills and essential for your next steps in education and onto employment. Gaining GCSE English Language provides evidence of these vital skills.

Fees Information

This course is free to students aged 16-18.

It is also free for students aged 19+ if they have not previously achieved a grade 4/C and meet certain eligibility criteria for fee remission. For further advice on fees, waivers and loans, please contact the Fees Co-Ordinator at Queens Drive.
