This course is designed by employers to extend the skills and knowledge of people working in the engineering sector. It will help develop your working practices and improve your career development opportunities.
Studied part time over two years, this is a Level 4 programme. You will study four units in the first year including: Engineering Maths; Engineering Science; Quality and Process Improvement; Electrical Systems and Fault Finding.
Then, in the second year, you will focus on your chosen subject pathway from areas including: Engineering Design; Electrical & Electronic Principles; CAD for Maintenance Engineers; Managing a Professional Engineering Project.
Assessment for this course is mainly through coursework. You will evidence your progress through written academic essays and reports, together with practical activities. There are no written exams for this course, however in some units, your knowledge may be assessed through class tests.
Entry requirements
3 GCSEs, incl. English and Maths, at grade 9-4 (A*-C). Alternative equivalency testing may be undertaken. Additionally, you must have 2 A Levels at grades A-D (one of which should be subject related) and Level 3 BTEC National Extended Diploma in a related subject.
Mature applicants without formal qualifications, but will be considered if with evidence of sufficient, relevant industrial experience.
Future career and study opportunities
On successful completion of this course, you will have the opportunity to progress onto higher level studies, including an HND or a degree. You may also move into a higher role within your organisation or develop your career further by moving into other employment. Career options are varied â including mechanical engineering across a range of sectors.
