Teaching (FE & Skills) Level 5 Diploma

This qualification is designed to provide the skills and knowledge needed for students aspiring to work as teachers in the further education sector.

Replacing the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training, the DIT aligns with current occupational standards. The qualification covers various roles across colleges, adult education, offender education, and work-based learning.

The DIT prepares educators with subject-specific teaching, tailored pedagogy, and strategies to address challenges. Additionally, it ensures learners gain digital competence, adapting to the ever-evolving landscape of educational technology in further education.

Students must achieve all mandatory units detailed below:

  • Pedagogic methodologies and curriculum development in further education

  • Understanding learners and educational practices in further education

  • Professionalism and inclusive teaching practices in further education

  • Promoting equality, diversity, and Inclusion in further education

  • Partnership working and collaboration in further education

  • Assessment principles and practices in further education

  • Resource development and management for effective learning in further education

  • Teaching practice in further education

  • Behaviour management in further education

  • Professional development and reflective practice in further education

  • • Digital pedagogies for teaching and learning in further education.

Entry requirements
  • 19 years of age and above

  • Qualified and/or experienced in their area of specialism

  • Able to demonstrate an ability to study at level 5

  • Do not have a criminal background which prevents them from working as a teacher with young people or vulnerable adults. There may be a requirement by the employer for learners to be checked by the disclosure and barring service. The learner is responsible for seeking advice from their employer regarding this. Students employed as a teacher should to work with their employer ensuring the relevant checks are complete as set out in part 3 of ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’ guidance document.

  • Achievement of a minimum of level 2 in both maths and English prior to starting the qualification

  • Suitable level of digital competency to ensure they can meet the requirements of the qualification.

Interview & recruitment process will require the following evidence:

  • References

  • Evidence of any entry requirements (certificates, IELTS, NARIC, DBS)

  • Demonstration of aptitude and ability against a clear criterion

  • Named teaching practice placements and subject -specific mentor from placement.

Future career and study opportunities

Students may progress into employment as a teacher within the further education and skills sector. Students may also wish to pursue Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) Status following successful achievement of this qualification.

Fees for 2027 entry: £2,500

Fees for 2027 continuers: £2,420
