This course offers a range of subjects aimed at the caring professions and education practice sector. Through the study of this course, students will be able to enhance their professional practice which will provide opportunities for career development. It is important that your employer supports your training needs. However, the degree can be successfully completed if you are in a voluntary role. To provide this flexibility around work, you will only have to attend College once a week.

The BA programme provides progression from the Foundation Degree in Educational Practice, Early Years or equivalent qualification. The programme greatly improves local access to the full degree for teaching support staff in primary, secondary and Further Education settings, at lower fees to university programmes. Additionally, teaching is face-to-face, with great support from staff, as well as good links to industry / employer engagement. You will be able to continue in your work and gain a higher qualification to progress in your careers, as well as developing knowledge, understanding, experience and skills in relation to research, policy and practice in education.

You will develop you professional skills through working with peers, sharing practice, presentations and leading discussions. Additionally, throughout the course, you will receive support from module and personal tutors, with regular opportunities to discuss progress and with access to support from academic support services.

Modules

For 2024-25 the programme is undergoing a revalidation which may result in a change of module titles and content.

Modules include:

  • Research Methods

  • Psychology in the Learning Environment

  • Dissertation (Double Module)

  • Developing Professional Roles and Identity

  • Contemporary Issues in Education (Double Module)

  • Developing an Effective Learning Environment.

Entry requirements

Level 5 qualification such as Foundation Degree (240 Credits equivalent) in a relevant subject.

Applicants should have at least two years’ experience of working or volunteering in an educational setting prior to commencing the course, and the setting must be willing to support their training needs. As part of the entry requirements students are also required to have a DBS check. All applicants will be required to attend an interview at the College.

Assessment methods

Assessment on the programme is through module tasks / assignments, which include essays, reports, research proposal, dissertation, seminars, case study, e-portfolios and presentations. There are no formal written exams on this programme.

Future career and study opportunities

Students will be able to enhance their professional practice which will provide opportunities for career development.

Following successful completion of the Honours degree, candidates intending to apply for Primary Initial Teacher Training (ITT) programmes should note that they will require GCSE Grade C (4) or above in English, Maths and Science at the point of application. (If progressing on to Secondary ITT or in the Further Education sector, Science is not a stipulated requirement for entry).
