Early Years Professional Leadership for England HND

This qualification is designed to meet the needs and expectations of students aspiring to work in the early years environment. Pearson BTEC Higher National qualifications in Early Years Professional Leadership for England offer a stimulating and challenging programme of study that will be both engaging and memorable for students. The assessed practice element in this qualification is recognised as ‘full and relevant’ by the Department for Education (DfE), which means students holding this qualification in England can count in the staff: child Level 3 ratios in an early years care or education setting as outlined in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) statutory framework.

The essential subject knowledge that students need to progress successfully into further study or the world of work, a simplified structure that enables students to undertake a substantial core of learning in the Level 4 Higher National Certificate (HNC) and build on this in the Level 5 Higher National Diploma (HND), with optional units linked to their specialist area of study.

Entry requirements

Typically, one of the L3 qualifications below would meet our academic entry requirements.

  • a BTEC Level 3 qualification in Children’s Play, Learning and Development (or a related subject)

  • a GCE Advanced Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or adequate performance in more than one GCE subject. This profile is likely to be supported by GCSE grades at A* to C (or equivalent) 9 to 4  (or equivalent) in subjects such as Mathematics and English 

  • a Level 3 Access to Higher Education Diploma from an approved further education institution

  • an international equivalent to the above qualifications.

English Language requirements:

  • If your first language is not English, we accept IELTS (Academic) at grade 6 overall with a minimum score of 5.5 in each component (Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking)  

Other specific entry requirements:

  • To enrol on this programme, you must be working or volunteering in an early years setting. This is because the course includes assessed professional practice and leadership tasks that need to be carried out in a real workplace

  • If you are already employed in the sector, you will be asked to provide written confirmation from your employer stating that they will support you in completing the placement requirements

  • If you are not currently in a setting, our Work Placement Officer will help you find a suitable placement to complete the required workplace hours

  • All specific placement requirements will be discussed during the interview.

International applicants:

  • We require evidence of international qualifications at point of application. Unfortunately, we are unable to consider applicants that require a Student Visa to study in the UK. 

Learning and teaching methods

During the course you will take part in a range of activities that will help you to develop the required skills and understanding for you to be successful in this programme and your chosen career, these will include opportunities to:

  • Engage with new areas of knowledge

  • Broaden and deepen your existing knowledge

  • Engage in critical analysis of concepts, theories, texts and practices

  • Question and challenge concepts, theories, texts and practices

  • Interrogate the assumptions underpinning theory and research to come to an understanding of the significance and limitations of theory and research

  • Opportunities to acquire practical experience in a range of activities relevant to your role in an educational setting

  • Engage in critical reflection of your own and others’ value systems, development and practices

We will use a range of strategies to support you to develop these skills and understanding, including:

  • Lectures, seminars and workshops

  • Range of group work strategies to include, discussion and the consideration of and development of resources

  • Development of online resources and portfolios

  • Group and independent projects that will benefit your institution and your own professional development.

Future career and study opportunities

The Level 4 Higher National Certificate provides a solid grounding in early years education, leadership and care that students can build on if they decide to continue their studies beyond this stage. The Level 5 Higher National Diploma enables students to commit to a leadership career path and progression route to degree-level study. On successful completion of the Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Early Years Professional Leadership for England, students can develop their careers in the early years sector through:

  • Entering employment

  • Continuing existing employment or seeking alternative employment or promotion

  • Joining an appropriate professional body or membership organisation

  • Committing to continuing professional development (CPD)

  • Progressing to a ‘top-up’ year to gain a full BA Hons.
