Design and Development for Engineering and Manufacturing

The T Level Technical Qualification in Design and Development for Engineering and Manufacturing allows you to gain an understanding of what is needed to work within the engineering industry. Design Engineers utilise cutting edge technologies and innovative solutions to develop products from prototype to reality using engineering skills in fields such as robotics, smartphones, sustainable energy and defence systems.

Students will develop an understanding of a broad range of issues relevant to the sector, including:

Working within the Engineering and Manufacturing Sectors – an understanding of how materials, conditions and context influence design processes and products

Essential mathematics for engineering and manufacturing – a knowledge and understanding of mathematics including standard matrices and determinants and standard trigonometry

Materials and their properties – understanding material processing techniques and their effects on materials and material quality, the condition of materials, how these are managed, and materials testing methods and techniques

Business, commercial and financial awareness – basic commercial principles including commercial priorities and markets, customers/clients/partners and resource allocation

In addition, specialist units include;

  • Skills in producing mechanical drawings and representations

  • Skills in designing and developing working models

  • Skills in testing models and prototypes.

This T level is suitable for School Leavers interested in a career in the Engineering industry The course consists of a technical qualification in design and development for engineering and manufacturing, an employer set project designed to develop core knowledge and skills, and an occupational specialism in Mechanical Engineering. It is equivalent to three A Levels and provides a route into university or higher education.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade 5 or above including Maths, English and Science (or equivalents).

Future career and study opportunities

This programme ensures that you are prepared with knowledge and skills that are required for: Working in the engineering industry, University (support with UCAS through your programme), HNC/HND engineering (General, Manufacturing, or Electronic pathways) at New College IOT facility, Higher or Degree Apprenticeships.
