Counselling Level 2

Counselling Level 2

In order to apply for Level 2 Counselling Skills, candidates must have completed Level 1 and must be able to give a contact for their Level 1 tutor (after getting their permission to use them as a referee.) There will be a selection evening prior to the course commencing.

This is an integrated course that looks at Person Centred, Psychoanalytical and Cognitive Behavioural approaches to counselling. It focuses on the skills of active listening and responding and is therefore ideal for use wherever there is a need to communicate with people, with colleagues in the work place, with customers, with students and with family and friends. Past students have commented that it is very different to any other course, that it is emotionally demanding and that it has changed the way they look at themselves and others. The course is run over 90 hours, including some Saturdays. A portfolio of work is submitted which includes weekly homework sheets, a weekly Journal, and tutor’s observations of listening skills. Your work will be verified by both an internal and an external verifier. In order to qualify for the award there must be 80% attendance.

Entry requirements

A positive reference from your previous tutor, together with your Level 1 certificate must be brought to your interview.

As this is an intensive Level 2 course, candidates must be prepared to find weekly homework time, and also time to write their Journal and submit it weekly. Candidates will need to work with their own personal issues and other candidates emotionally charged material during the practice sessions. Candidates will be advised to take care of themselves when working in skills practice and not deal with deeply distressing material when in the client role. Confidentiality on the course is vital and candidates will not discuss outside the group sessions anything that is disclosed. Breaking confidentiality will result in dismissal from the course.
