Software Development Apprenticeship Level 4

The primary role of a software developer is to build and test simple, high-quality code across front end, logic and database layers. As a developer, you would typically be working as part of a larger team, in which you would have responsibility for some elements of the overall project. Developers interpret design documentation and specifications, working with the client and the team.

Delivery and assessment

This apprenticeship standard has been developed with the help of employers such as: Actavis, Aesica Pharmaceuticals, Astra Zeneca, BCM, Essar, Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies, GSK, Ineos, Lotte Chemical UK, Lucite, Medimmume, Pfizer, SABIC UK Petrochemicals, Sellafield, Sembcorp, Seralab, Synergy Outsourcing, Victrex, RSC, IChemE, SB.

There are a various elements to each Apprenticeship, which is called a Standard. This Standard includes:

A knowledge-based qualification

  • Software Development Methodologies

  • MTA/MCP Programming in HTML5 with Java Script and CSS3

On Programme Assessment

  • Portfolio of evidence

  • Assessment of behaviours and skills

  • Technical knowledge and understanding

  • Technical competencies

Functional Skills

  • Maths, English at Level 2

End-point assessment

  • Synoptic project

  • Summative portfolio

  • Employer reference

  • Interview

Typical job roles in this specialist area include: Web Developer, Application Developer, Mobile App Developer, Games Developer, Software Developer.

Entry requirements

You will need 5 GCSEs including Maths and English at grade 9 - 4 (A*- C) or be willing to undertake Functional Skills Level 2 or BTEC in IT/ Software Development Level 3.

We do have to make sure that you have the potential to achieve the different elements that make up this qualification, and that you are working at the right level in your job. It may be a requirement to complete an initial assessment in English and Maths, and this may lead to taking some additional diagnostic assessments and skills exams.

Future career and study opportunities

On completion of this apprenticeship, you will be eligible for entry onto the register of IT Technicians, confirming your SFIA level 4 professional competence.
