Chemistry A Level

Chemistry A Level

This A Level is included within the following A Level pathways as a recommended core subject:

  • Environment

  • Geography and Earth Science

  • Medical Health

  • STEM and Healthcare pathways

It is also in the following pathways as a recommended additional subject:

  • Engineering

  • Maths

  • Physics and Computer Science.

  • However, you can choose Chemistry with any A Level/equivalent combination, there is plenty of choice and flexibility.

In this course you will study key chemical processes via a range of resources, practical work, small group discussions and lectures. Areas covered include:

  • Module 1: Development of Practical Skills in Chemistry

  • Module 2: Foundations in Chemistry: study of atoms; molecules and equations; calculations involving reacting substances; acid-base reactions and structure and bonding of substances.

  • Module 3: Periodic table and energy: study of Group 2 and halogens; enthalpy changes, rate of reaction and equilibrium.

  • Module 4: Core Organic Chemistry: study of hydrocarbons and other organic chemicals; how substances can be analysed.

  • Module 5: Physical Chemistry and Transition Elements: mathematical treatment of reaction rates, equilibrium, pH, buffers with transition metal chemistry.

  • Module 6: Further study of organic chemistry and analysis: further information on organic chemistry with analysis of substances.

You will study the course for 4.5 hours a week in the first year and 5 hours a week in the second year. You should expect to spend an additional 4.5 hours per week on homework and private study. Mock exams are held during the first year (in February/March), but do not count towards the final A Level. Exams for the whole A level are held in May or June of the second year.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 4/C or above. You will need either GCSE Chemistry or Additional Science at minimum grade 6/B or 6-6 in Combined Science. English Language and Maths at grade 5/C are also required.

Future career and study opportunities

Chemistry is essential for careers in Medicine, Chemical Engineering, Veterinary Science, Dentistry, Forensic Science, Pharmacy and Biochemistry and many more. Many non-scientific employers often choose scientists to fill their vacancies because one of the main things you learn when studying a scientific subject is to think logically and solve problems.

Additional resources/costs

You will be expected to supply your own stationery and you may want to purchase a textbook. Contributions may also be required for extra activities and visits you wish to take part in.
